York - December 2007

On December 23 and 24 we took a trip up to York. This is a really pretty old city situated on the banks of the River Ouse. Besides being a rare walled city with most of its wall intact and home to the a 13th Century tower and the Jorvic Viking Museum, it is also home to the National Railway Museum (yes, my first stop).

Besides the museum, we visited the large shopping area including the Christmas market. We didn't get to visit many of the historic sites since they are all closed on Christmas Eve. However, we did get to walk along the river and the old wall.

We stayed at the Queen's Hotel which was convienently located across the river from the main downtown area. Although a bit more expensive, this was a much nicer hotel than either of the two Travelodges we've stayed in on previous trips. And unlike the York Travelodge, the Queen's Hotel is only a five minute walk from the train station. However, 13-inch TVs seem to be the standard size for hotels here.

Even with the closed historic sites, there was plenty to keep us occupied for the 24 hours we were there. Naturally, pictures are available in the Gallery.
